Ella Blackburn discusses The Battle of Trafalgar with Professor Matthew Hughes exlporing the build up to the battle, the a battle itself, and in particular the tactics employed by Nelson, as well as looking at the aftermath. Ella and Matthew explore what life was like on a Royal Navy warship in 1805, how powerful they were and indeed who the people were who manned them and why the battle mattered so much to Britain.
Trafalgar was a major naval engament that occured off the Spannish coast on October 21st 1805 and pitched the naval forces of the British Royal Navy against that of Napoleonic France and their ally Spain. The outcome of the battle saved Britain from invasion and has been forever immortalised with the staue to the victorious Nelson on his eponymous column in Trafalgar Square London. .
